Operation Ice pick

In the 1950s officials in West Virginia gave Dr. Walter Freeman free rein of the state’s asylums as part of a mass-scale lobotomy experiment dubbed Operation Ice Pick. Claire Prentice investigates why and looks at the controversial career of America’s most prolific lobotomist, who boasted that lobotomy was “easier than curing a toothache” and whose patients included President John F. Kennedy’s sister, Rose Kennedy.
